Yuchai Is Super Confident in Its Innovation Founded in 1951, with 30 wholly-owned, holding and joint-stock subsidiaries, Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as the Yuchai Group) is an internal combustion engine manufacturing base with the most complete spectrum of products in the country. In recent years, machinery manufacturing industry has been dropped off influenced by domestic and foreign economic situations, especially domestic overcapacity and unreasonable product structure. Reversely, Yuchai has sold over 3 million engines with the annualized revenues amount to RMB 40 billion. Over the years, as China’s largest engine R&D manufacturing base, Yuchai adjusts and optimizes its industrial structure and constantly strengthens its capacity for independent innovation. Therefore, the key technology continues to be the top in the sector for further keeping its own top leader in the industry. Innovation-Driven In 2013, seven world-class diesel-engine products for high-speed craft including YC4F launched by Yuchai, marked that Yuchai had the relatively well-developed spectrum of products in the marine & D-drive engine field of high speed craft. In 2014, Yuchai had developed large marine & D-drive engines like YC12VC and YC16V. Thus, it changed the domestic market of high-end marine & D-drive engine dominated by foreign products, forming the new growth point of enterprises. In 2015, China's first successful diesel engine developed by Yuchai had been developed. Statistics shows that, over the five years, Yuchai has launched more than 60 new engine products by taking advantage of the environmental upgrading. Innovation is the lifeblood of enterprise development. For this reason, Yuchai has continuously strengthened its capacity for independent innovation, dropped nearly RMB 4 billion on its R&D with the year-on-year growth of 112% over the past five years. Yuchai has won three the second prizes of national science and technology progress awards including the ‘Key Technology and Application of Low-noise Design of Diesel Engine’ and ‘Key Technology and Industrialization of Energy-conserving and Environment-friendly Engines’ through independent innovation. As the national diesel engine enterprise with tremendous R&D strength, Yuchai has given its priority to the country’s first Euro VI diesel engine, keeping pace with emissions upgrading, and centralized superior resources to develop the most competitive products. Yuchai is expected to invest RMB 5 billion on Euro VI alone, including RMB 2 billion in R&D. Accordingly, the corresponding software and hardware will also be upgraded. The efforts by Yuchai brought about great results. On January 10 of this year, the lighting ceremony of Euro VI was launched at test center of engineering research institute. The success of the fire marked that Yuchai early stepped into the new era of Euro VI, and again took the lead by a number of cutting-edge technologies. System reengineering Yuchai has always dreamed of becoming a world-class company in the world. But for that to happen, since 2014, Yuchai advanced the ‘second startup’ with the purpose of high-quality products and high increasing benefits by focusing on comprehensive transformation and upgrading, mainly taking the market and product transformation, based on intelligent manufacturing and technological innovation to strive to become an advanced equipment manufacturer. ‘We must be clear that Chinese machinery manufacturers, including Yuchai, still have a gap with the world-class manufacturers. Only through system reengineering can we break through and surpass them.’ said Yan Ping, Chairman of Guangxi Yuchai Machinery Group Co., Ltd. Over the five years, Yuchai had made a significant achievement by fully promoting the system reengineering and transforming through lean management and group operation. "We will lay the foundation and constantly cultivate and introduce talents within three years." said Yan Ping. The innovation planning of Yuchai is conducted on the condition of becoming the world first-class enterprise. Adhering to this idea, Yuchai has introduced more than 10 top foreign experts to create an internationally competitive products and management system with the ‘foreign brains’. Corporate culture is different at home and abroad, so the concept conflict exists. For example, Yuchai’s leaders had fierce thought collision with Japanese experts, who came to Yuchai in the first time. “That's not a bad thing. After all, Yuchai has the inertia of thinking exists with 60 years of management experience. The more the inertia of thinking has, the greater the resistance is to reform after the collision, but it also means that the success of the reform will bring greater changes.” said a relevant person in charge of Yuchai. One of the typical examples is parts and components inspection system. With the help of foreign experts, Yuchai has set up a new system, which is completely different from the traditional one, and the core team management and international vision have been continuously improved. “Over the past 5 years, almost the innovations of Yuchai are based on preliminarily well-laid planning, programming and system reengineering. We will increase enterprise efficiency and effectiveness before the process is simplified. We will achieve truly efficient innovation before we follow the natural law of survival of the fittest, and let the capable personnel shoulder the important responsibility of development.” the person in charge said. Yuchai made the total sales of the engine for five consecutive years ranked first in the industry through a series of changes in innovation. In 2016, the operating quality and profitability of Yuchai continued to rebound, and the operating profit margins were at their best in history. Move toward the world Since the 18th national congress of CPC, Yuchai has been expanding overseas markets with the One Belt and Road Initiative, promoting international strategy, brand awareness and its influence. Over the 5 years, Yuchai has 15 overseas offices, 450 overseas service branches, 124 overseas service agents. Its products are sold more than 170 to other countries and regions, covering Asia, Europe, the United States, Africa and Oceania. The number of overseas market share has exceeded 360 thousand. Yuchai has created an international R&D platform in a bid to break through the international advanced technology. To enhance the competitiveness of products and consolidate its domestic market, Yuchai also continue to improve the market competitive advantages in Southeast Asian regions including Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines, and is committed to achieving new breakthroughs in these countries such as Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Latin America, and expanding cooperation between the engine and OMEs to support export share. With the growing influence of Yuchai brand, overseas market sales are rising. In the first half of this year, the entry volume of the engine for overseas market has grown by 4.6%. Among them, the export of passenger cars was further consolidated with an increase of 105% year on year, while the marine & D-drive engine per unit of overseas markets grew by more than 10% year on year. Even some experts said, “More sluggish the market is, while the Yuchai personnel keep calmer.” “Next, yuchai will continue to further advance control reengineering and system reforming, take the opportunity of the Euro VI, promote the overall high-end products, and stride forward to the international advanced enterprises.” said Yan Ping. Yuchai Follows Emission Upgrading to Stand Out from the Market of Euro V Heavy Truck Yuchai Follows Emission Upgrading to Stand Out from the Market of Euro V Heavy Truck In 2017, China's heavy truck market has seen a long overdue recovery. In the first seven months, the number of heavy trucks reached a total of 678, 000, representing a year-on-year growth of 74% compared with that of 390,000 the last year. On the whole, the figures of heavy trucks had grown by 288,000, and it was expected to over more than 1.1 million this year affected by the economic recovery and road logistics demand growth, fixed assets investment project driving demand for heavy trucks. It is worth noting that, on July 1, the full implementation of new regulations for Euro V kept abreast of the growing price of heavy trucks. Thanks to the previous emission standards for product upgrading to enhance the performance, the domestic heavy truck manufacturers had been locked and loaded. Recently, YC Power, as the representative of domestic leading green power supplier, brought its Euro V of environmental protection and energy saving products at the sixteenth exhibition of China (Beijing) international internal combustion engines and parts & components. Among them, products of Yuchai including Euro V diesel engines such as YC6K, YC6JA, and YC4S, Euro V gas engine including YC6MKN, YCHPS medium mixed hybrid power assembly, E150 pure electric motor, and 11 engines including YC6L Euro Ⅵ diesel engine. Therefore, Yuchai showed its confidence to deal with the diverse needs of the Euro V market. Emission upgrading with advanced technology The same thing has different meanings for different people. For example, emission upgrading from the Euro III to Euro V, Yuchai is the first one to launch the industry-leading products to meet emission standards. In fact, in early 2010, the Euro V had been entered the market in bulk, before the standard for Euro V was implemented in July 1 of this year. As of 2016, the number of Euro V engine sales had exceeded 100,000. “The diesel engine and the major gas engine CH-5 were covered all the advertisements, and the whole series of products were put in the market.” Lin Zhiqiang, Senior Director of clean-energy engine R&D and marketing, told the customers at <http://www.ecv360.com>. Yuchai diesel engines that have unique advantages, especially in on-road heavy truck, both from technology and infrastructure, it is not easy to be replaced by clean-energy vehicles in the short terms. Therefore, Yuchai has always been committed to performance development and promotion in the field of diesel engine, and continued to provide high quality green power for customers. For example, YC6K heavy-duty diesel engine was launched in 2010 by its insight into the heavy truck industry. With strong technical capabilities and excellent performance, it drew attention in the heavy truck market. YC6K shows its excellent performance in the diesel engine, and has achieved several good results. For instance, the first four-valve heavy-duty diesel engine with overhead camshaft is developed to meet the emission standards of Euro III to Euro VI, the first product is to pass the RG reliability growth tests, the application of latest Top-Down Cooling technology, and introduction of accurate combustion and electronic control technology, engine reverse cross-flow cooling technology, high-strength materials and cylinder braking technology with high-efficiency engine. Statistics shows that the 12-liter YC6K diesel engine has a rated power of 480 HP with maximum torque of 1800-2200N.m. YC6K13 is the largest displacement of 13-liter engine on the domestic market, with rated power 580 HP and the maximum torque of 2550N.m, and it can meet the engine demand of prefix ‘2’ final drive ratio for with large torque, fast speed, and low consumption. The engine has good engine performance been tested through 1.5 million kilometers in Turpan, Golmud, Kunlun Mountains and Heihe with the high-temperature, arctic-alpine and high-altitude. Compared with the similar products, YC6K has the advantages of fast starting, speed lifting and fast hill-climbing, and time consumption is shorter in the same journey. The dynamic response of YC6K can reach within 2S, while the competitors are usually above 4S. The excellent quality not only makes YC6K take the lead in technology, but also can meet the demand of high-efficient logistics tractor and compound road tractor. Industry-leading: The growth rate higher than that of the industry Overconfidence is a recipe for failure of competition. Good products should be recognized by customers. What is the market response for truck engine represented by Yuchai YC6K? Yuchai YC6K, launched in the market with the enough power, low consumption, comfortableness and reliability, has been recognized by the customers for heavy truck including C&C Trucks, Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor Co., Ltd., Dongfeng Motor Corporation, JAC and Shanxi Dayun Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd. The good reputation of YC6K heavy engine has been paid more attention by OEMs. In the first seven months, the sales growth of traction engine of heavy card was much higher than other manufacturers. This is not only because YC6K has the same platform advantages with the latest generation of heavy-duty structure in Europe, but also continues the quality upgrading of Yuchai. After entering the Euro V, Yuchai has adopted 12-liter and 13-liter YC6K heavy engine in truck factories, increasing the matching development. YC6K applies advanced technologies such as overhead camshaft, roller rocker, and integral cylinder head. Moreover, Yuchai has developed a matching 13-liter YC6K engine with gas heavy truck for special needs in some areas. In the first half of this year, the demand of YC6K gas machine exceeds it provides in the manufacturers like the traction gas heavy truck of Dongfeng Motor Corporation, and C&C Trucks. A survey of feedback on heavy truck equipped with YC6K was done among customers. It showed that a higher recognition with 97% of customers satisfied with YC6K, and 99% satisfied with the dynamic property, 95% satisfied with the economy. The tracking data of actual vehicle show that, on the condition of a total of 49 tons and the average speed of 80 km/h, the average fuel consumption of the Dongfeng Liuzhou Vehicle H7 tractor heavy truck equipped with 6K, is 30L for a round-trip about hundreds of kilometers, and it meets the requirements of the existing high-efficient logistics on the dynamic property, economy and reliability. Following the YC6K, the Euro V engines for heavy truck including YC6K, YC6KN, YC6MK, YC6MKN, and YC6L have been made a great breakthrough in traction market. At present, YC engine for heavy truck has been matched with heavy truck brands such as C&C Trucks, Dongfeng Liuzhou Vehicle Co., Ltd., Dongfeng Motor Corporation, JAC and Shanxi Dayun Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd, and won a wide circle of customers. Where there is a will, there is a way. Success will move toward Yuchai. Confronted with challenges and opportunities of emission upgrading, Yuchai has worked to overcome obstacles along with YC6K, which has greatly enhanced the brand's influence. Since this year, the truck engine of Yuchai has been growing in the logistics market. Besides the heavy truck, it has also made a great progress in the 4X2 light loading truck market for logistics. From the ‘turbine’ to ‘direct injection’, from ‘naturally aspirated’ to ‘turbocharged intercooling’, and from ‘two-valve’ to the ‘four-valve’, Yuchai has updated the traditional product competitive landscape again, YC6K also keeps pace with it. “Despite huge challenges in the future, we have confidence in our products and its wide circle of customers, and it is not easy to be surpassed in a short time.” Mr. Lin said, “Yuchai will constantly deliver superior products in accordance with the changes of the market, customers’ needs.” We supply multiple brands of generator set, such as: Cummins, Volvo, Deutz, Doosan Daewoo, MTU, Ricardo, Perkins, Shangchai, Weichai, Yuchai etc. The style of genset is varied, such as: container genset, trailer genset, portable trailer genset, soundproof genset, low noise genset, and silent genset, etc. Besides, we also supply design and construction of the noise reduction project up to the customer's requirements. How to Operate Cummins Engine in Cold Weather Want to know about Cummins engine protective measures and operation under cold weather? Don't know how to operate your engine in a right way? Don't worry, the following article will show you more. If you are interested, continue reading. Then you will find that it is not difficult thing to prolong the diesel generator set service life Cold Weather Protective Measures
3. Immersion-type water and oil heaters are available for engines used in cold-weather operations and to maintain temperatures to permit the engine to operate at full load at start-up. Engine Operation in Cold Weather Satisfactory performance of a diesel engine operating in low ambient temperature conditions requires modification of the engine, surrounding equipment, operating practices and maintenance procedures. The colder the temperatures encountered the greater the amount of modification required and yet with the modifications applied, the engines must still be capable of operation in warmer climates without extensive changes. The following information is provided to engine owners, operators and maintenance personnel on how the modifications can be applied to get satisfactory performance from their diesel engines. There are three basic objectives to be accomplished: 1. Reasonable starting characteristics followed by practical and dependable warm-up of the engine and equipment. 2. A unit or installation which is as independent as possible from external influences. 3. Modifications which maintain satisfactory operating temperatures with a minimum increase in maintenance of the equipment and accessories. If satisfactory engine temperature is not maintained, higher maintenance cost will result due to the increased engine wear, poor performance and formation of excessive carbon, varnish and other deposits. Special provisions to overcome low temperatures are definitely necessary, whereas as change to warmer climate normally requires only a minimum of revision. Most of the accessories should be designed in such a way that they can be disconnected so there is little effect on the engine when they are not in use. The two most commonly used terms associated with preparation of equipment for low temperature operation are “Winterization” and “Arctic Specifications”. Winterization of the engine and or components so starting and operation are possible in the lowest temperature to be encountered requires: 1. Use of correct materials. 2. Proper lubrication, low temperature lubricating oils. 3. Protection from the low temperature air. The metal temperature does not change, but the rate of heat dissipation is affected. 4. Fuel of the proper grade for the lowest temperature. 5. Heating to be provided to increase the engine block and component temperature to a minimum of -25°F [-32°C] for starting in lower temperatures. 6. Proper external heating source available. 7. Electrical equipment capable of operating in the lowest expected temperature. Arctic specifications refer to the design material and specifications of the components necessary for satisfactory engine operation in extreme low temperatures to -65°F [-54°C]. Contact Cummins Company, Inc., or the equipment manufacturer to obtain the special items required. For additional information on cold weather operation, obtain Service Bulletin No. 3379009 “Engine Operation in Cold Weather,” from the nearest Cummins Distributor or dealer. Caution: “Anti-leak” antifreeze are not recommended for use in Cummins Engines. Although these antifreeze are chemically compatible with DCA water treatment, the “anti-leak” agents may clog the coolant filters and render them ineffective. Instruction to Operate Cummins Engine At High Altitude Don't know how to correctly operate Cummins engine at high altitude? Should the engine idle for a long time before shut-down? In this article, you will learn the detailed steps. No matter it is to shut-down the engine or start the engine, it has the related requirements. Continue reading. In areas of high altitude, the air pressure drops and weather reducing the air density. This can create problems with start a new diesel generator if it is not accounted air compressor in combustion chamber for ignition. Another factor that gets affected is availability of ambient air to facilitate heat dissipation from the generator. A lot of heat is created during the combustion process and needs to be dissipated into the environment to reduce engine temperature. At high altitudes, due to the low air density, heat dissipation occurs at a much slower, resulting in high engine temperatures for a sustained period of time. The engine remains hot and overheating is a common problem in such cases. High Altitude Operation Some engines, lose horsepower when they are operated at high altitude because the air is too thin to burn as much fuel as at sea level. This loss is about 3 percent for each 1000 ft [304.8] of altitude above sea level. Operate the engine using a lower power requirement at high altitude to prevent smoke and over-fueling. Power Take-Off Application With PT(type G) VS Fuel Pump The VS fuel pump governor lever is used to change the standard governed speed of the engine from rated speed to an intermediate power take-off speed. When changing from the standard speed range to the power take-off speed with the engine idling on standard throttle, operate as follow: 1. Place the VS speed control lever in the operating position. 2. Lock the standard throttle in the full-open position. 3. Engage the power take-off. To return to standard throttle. 1. Disengage the power take-off. 2. Return the standard throttle to the idle position. 3. Lock the VS speed control lever in the maximum speed position. Engine Shut-Down Idle Engine A Few Minutes Before Shut-Down It is important to idle engine 3 to 5 minutes before shutting it down to allow the lubricating oil and water to carry heat away from the combustion chamber, bearings, shafts, etc. this is especially important with turbocharged engines. The turbocharger contains bearings and seals that are subject to the high beat of combustion exhaust gases. While the engine is running, this heat is carried away by oil circulation, but if the engine is stopped suddenly, the turbocharger temperature may rise as much as 100°F [38°C]. The results of the extreme heat may be seized bearings or loose oil seals. Do Not Idle Engine for Excessively Long Periods Long periods od idling are not good for an engine because the combustion chamber temperatures drop so low the fuel may not burn completely. This will cause carbon to clog the injector spray holes and piston rings and may result in stuck valves. If the engine coolant temperature becomes too low, raw fuel will wash the lubrication oil off the cylinder walls and dilute the crankcase oil so all moving parts of the engine will suffer from poor lubrication. If the engine is not being used, shut it down. Turn Switch to “Off” Position to Shut Down the Engine The engine can be shut down completely by turning off the switch on installations equipped with an electric shut-down valve, or by turning the manual shut-down valve knob. Turning off the switch which controls the electric shut-down valve stops the engine unless the override button on the shut-down valve has been locked in the open position. If the manual override on the electric shut-down valve is being used, turn the button fully counterclockwise to stop the engine. Refer to “Normal Starting Procedure”. The valve cannot be reopened by the switch until after the engine comes to a complete stop, unless a rapid restart valve is installed. Caution: Never leave the switch key or the override button in the valve open or in the run position when the engine is not running. With overhead tanks this would allow fuel to drain into the cylinders, causing a hydraulic lock. Stop the Engine Immediately If Any Parts Fail Practically all failures give some warning to the operator before the parts fail and ruin the engine. Many engines are saved because alert operators heed warning signs (sudden drop in oil pressure, unusual noises, etc) and immediately shut down the engine. Diesel engines work by compressing air with a piston to create heat necessary to ignite the fuel that is then directly injected into it. In most diesel engines are designed to work with the air density we have at 500 feet or less. For every 1000 feet in elevation the air density decreases 2.9 - 3%. At 3000 feet there is up to 9% less air to compress so less heat is generated. The loss of heat results in incomplete combustion and loss of power. The incomplete combustion also damages exhaust systems and shortens engine life. In turbo systems the larger engines are able to ram more air into the combustion chamber increasing the air density however; portable generators do not use turbo or super chargers, so portable diesel generators are not able to functioning in high altitude are. It is not considered normal operating conditions and any engine damage would not be covered. It is the same with all diesels however; most other sellers will not tell you this. For higher altitudes you need a super charger or turbo charger. That is only something you find on larger diesel engines. They are compressors that ram more air into the engine to create higher pressures and greater air density. Operation of Yuchai diesel engine (step 1 )Step one Selection of fuel, lubrication oil and coolant ① Fuel The fuel should be selected according to ambient temperature. The selection should comply with light Diesel Fuel(GB252 choice fuel and first class fuel). ② Oil Lubricating oil should be selected according to the ambient condition. The class of oil should not be lower thant CD class of GB11122-1997 ③ Coolant The coolant should be anti-freezing, especially when the engine is used in the plateau and in cold weather(below 0℃). It is good for the engine. The most used anti-freezer is glycol-water, which is a mixture of glycol and water( soft water is best. such as well water, spring water or other hard water, it should be mixed 2g tri-sodium phosphate with one liter water for softing). Selection of different proportionality coolant should vary with the ambient temperature. Note: When the percentage of the glycol is above 68%, its freezing point rises. So the percentage of the glycol should not be above 68% when you make up anti-freezer. Glycol is a transparent, viscid, poisonous liquid. Wash your skin with water immediately if it contacts your skin. Glycol is flammable. So, do not weld or light fire when there is coolant leakage. When there is an emergency, anti-freeze can be replaced by soft water, such as tap water and rain water. Otherwise there will be scale on the wall of water jackets of diesel engine and the deposit will weaken cooling effect and cause the engine to over heat. For step two, please visit: Operation of Yuchai diesel engine (step 2 ) How to Maintain Cummins Engine In Cold Weather It is very important to know how to correctly start diesel engine like Cummins under cold weather. In this way, it not only helps prolong the engine’s service life and also keeps the generator set run smoothly. Take a few time to read this article, and then you will learn a lot. Cold Weather Starting (Note: A water jacket heater is recommended for stand-by generator set applications installed in a cold climate.) The cold winter weather currently enveloping a good portion of the United States has people scurrying to purchase new car batteries and fill windshield fluid reservoirs. Cold weather in these regions is nothing new and the past week has seen sub-zero temperatures in the Upper Midwest and Northeast portions of the country. Whether you love, hate, or even just tolerate it, the season requires more preparation in many aspects of life. Standby generators sit outside in all sorts of weather, just waiting to wake up and provide power in the event of an outage. In the subfreezing weather, emergency power keeps the furnace running and pipes from freezing during an outage, not to mention keeping families warm. Keep your standby generator clear of snow and ice and ensure that the air intake vents don’t become clogged or blocked by debris. Perform maintenance on schedule. Preheater The glow plug system supplies heat to the cylinders so that compression temperatures are sufficient to ignite the fuel. To aid in starting the genset engine when the temperature is 50 °F[10.0°C] or below, an intake air preheater is available. Preheater equipment consists of a hand-priming pump to pump fuel into the intake manifold, and a switch to turn on the glow plug which is electrically heated by the battery. Fuel burns in the intake manifold and heats the intake air. Warning: Do not use vapor in conjunction with the preheater. To do so could result in a fire. Steps to use the preheater for cold starting: 1. Set the throttle in idle position. Turn the glow plug toggle switch to the “NO” position. The red indicator light must be on. 2. After the red light has been on for 20 seconds, start cranking the engine. As soon as the engine begins rotating, operate the preheater priming pump to maintain 80 to 100 psi [552 to 693kPa] fuel pressure. Use of the primer before the 20 seconds interval will wet the glow plug and prevent heating. 3. If the engine does nor start within 30 seconds, stop cranking. Wait one or two minutes and repeat the cranking operation. 4. After the engine starts, pump the primer slowly to keep the engine idling smoothly. In cold weather this may require 4 to 5 minutes or longer. Do not accelerate the engine. 5. When the engine has warmed up so it does not falter between primer strokes, stop pumping. Close and lock the primer. Turn off the glow plug toggle switch. (The red indicator light will go out.) 6. If the engine gives no indication of starting during the first three full strokes of the preheater pump, touch –check the intake manifold for heat. If there is no heat, check the electrical wiring. If the wiring is all right, remove the intake manifold and check the preheater. Note: The preheater priming pump, switches and resistor are located at the instrument panel and should be checked during engine starting. The cold starting aid, approved for use in Cummins Engines, has been based upon starting aid capabilities to -25°F[-32°C]. Cautions: Do not attempt to use vapor compound type starting aids near heat, open flame or on engines equipped with a glow plug system. Recommended Starting Technique Using Fleetguard Starting Aid 1. Set the throttle for idle. 2. Disengage the driven unit or make sure gears are in neutral.a 3. Open the manual fuel shut-down valve, or electric shut-down valve, whichever is used. 4. Engage the starter and while cranking, apply metered amounts of starting fluid until the engine idles smoothly. Use of Starting Fluid Without Metering Equipment 1. Spray starting fluid into the air cleaner intake, while a second man cranks the engine Warning: Never handle starting fluid near an open flame. Never use it with a preheater or flame thrower equipment. Do not breathe the fumes. Use of of too much will cause excessively high pressures and detonation, or over speed the engine. 2. Starting aid fumes will be drawn into the air intake manifold and the cold engines should start without difficulty. Warning: Fuel oil or volatile fuel cold starting aids are not to be used in underground mine or tunnel operations. If the engine is so equipped check with the local U.S. Bureau of Mines Inspector for use of the starting aid. A marginal battery during the summer and fall may not seem like an issue. Every week the standby generator wakes up and starts its exercise cycle. All seems well, despite controller alerts that the battery is near the end of its life. Now that winter has arrived, that marginal battery may not have the power to start the engine when temperatures fall below freezing. A power outage at two o’clock in the morning is not the time to realize your battery can’t start the engine in colder weather. If your battery is near the end of its expected life, or if the controller tells you it is time to replace the battery, purchase a new, quality battery and install it. Some standby models allow the addition of other accessories to ensure easy starts in cold weather. Oil warmers and block heaters help keep the engine warm for easier starts, but should always be paired with a battery warmer, if one is not included in the kit. A cold weather kit is a necessity anywhere the temperature falls below thirty-two degrees. If it does not include a battery warmer, purchase one separately. Cold weather kits may change the oil type or viscosity required. Generac’s Extreme Cold Weather kit for their liquid cooled engines require the use of synthetic 5W-30 oil. Even if you live in the south where temperatures are usually above freezing, ice storms and other weather events that last just a few days can make engine starts more difficult. The cost of a cold weather kit is cheap insurance. Useful Tips to Start Cummins Engines Without question, it is very necessary and important to learn how to correctly start diesel engines. If you don’t know, then take a few time to read this article and you will know what you should pay attention to when starting the engines Staring the Engines Please note that starting requires that clean air and fuel are supplied to the combustion chambers in the proper quantities at the correct time. Normal Starting Procedure Warning: Before starting, be sure that everyone is clear of the engine and equipment. If the fuel system is equipped with an overspeed stop, push the “Reset” button before attempting to start the engine. 1. On engines equipped with an air activated prelube device, open the air valve to activate the piston in the prelube device which will lubricate all moving parts in the engine. Note: On engines equipped with an oil pressure safety switch, hold the fuel by-pass switch in the “start” position until the engine oil pressure reaches 7 to 10 psi (48 to 69 kpa); then, move it to the “run” position. 2. Set the throttle for idle speed and disengage the driven unit. Caution: To protect the turbocharger during start-up by not opening the throttle or accelerating above 1000 rpm until the idle speed oil pressure registers on the gauge.
4. Pull the decompression release lever (if equipped) and press the starter button or turn the key switch to the “start” position. After three or four seconds of cranking, close the decompress release lever and continue to crank until the engine fires. Caution: To prevent permanent cranking motor damage, do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds continuously. If the engine does not fire within the first 30 seconds, wait one to two minutes before recranking. 5. At the initial start or after oil or filter changes and after the engine has run for a few minutes, shut it down and wait 15 minutes for the oil to drain back into the pan. Check the engine oil level again; add oil as necessary to bring the oil level to the “H” mark on dipstick. The drop in oil level is due to absorption by the oil filters. Never operate the engine with the oil level below the low level mark or above the high level mark. If you find that your diesel generator is hard to start, then here are the reason for why. Battery failure The single most frequent service call for generator failure is related to battery failure. Eighty percent of all battery failure is related to sulfation buildup — the accumulation of lead sulfates on the plates of lead-acid batteries. This buildup occurs when the sulfur molecules in the electrolyte (battery acid) become so deeply discharged that they begin to coat the battery's lead plates. When enough plate area has sulfated, the battery will not be able to provide enough current and will normally need to be replaced. Battery failure is commonly the result of low electrolyte levels — battery plates exposed to air will immediately sulfate. Battery cells are shorted when sedimentary trays fill up with lead debris. You can avoid shorted batteries if you replace them regularly. Some experts recommend replacing them every three years. Although battery failure can result from open cells, this is not a common occurrence. Open cells are the result of an overcurrent of the battery system. If a generator system has had several battery failures determined to be caused by open cells, the unit may require larger batteries capable of higher cold cranking amps (CCAs). Frequently, battery failure is due to the charger breaker being open or tripped — often the result of human error rather than actual charger failure. This usually occurs after service on a generator, or some type of maintenance, where the charger has been turned off and not turned back on again when the service is completed. Always double check a generator system after any service or maintenance to make sure everything is functioning properly. Because many battery problems are caused by dirty and loose connections, maintenance is critical. Cable connections need to be regularly cleaned and tightened. Battery charger failures are difficult to prevent, and cannot be accurately predicted. However, monitoring the charge rates from month to month will establish a trend that can help map the potential for failure. A properly functioning battery charger will have a constant charge rate for any given system. An increase of amperage may show signs of a battery or charger malfunction. Low coolant levels The most obvious cause for a low coolant level is either an external or internal leak. Pay close attention to any visible puddles of coolant during weekly inspections of the unit(s). The color of the coolant varies by manufacturer and may look like red-dyed diesel fuel. Inspect oil for any signs of color change or a milky texture and hoses for “crusties” — the sign of coolant seeping and additives drying up at the connection. While many generators are equipped with low coolant level alarms, few have a dedicated alarm indicator for low coolant. Commonly, this alarm will be tied in to a high coolant temp shutdown circuit. Internally plugged radiator cores will also cause low coolant level shutdowns. When the generator is under load, the thermostats open completely, and the radiator cannot allow the proper amount of flow through the core. The coolant has to go somewhere, so it purges through the overflow line. As the engine cools off and the thermostat closes, the level drops and activates the low coolant level shutdown. This also occurs when float switch-type coolant level sensors are used, and the lines are plumbed to the top and bottom radiator tanks. When the thermostats open, the path of least resistance is through the float switch lines, and the flow causes the float to drop and shutdown the engine. The thermostat will not open enough to cause this during regular weekly running of the generator. It will have to be tested under load to cause the thermostats to fully open. A full load test with an external load bank is the only accurate way to check a cooling system. Low coolant temp alarms Low coolant temp alarms are mainly the result of faulty block heaters. Given the fact that they run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, they're going to fail periodically. A block heater will normally not cause the engine not to run. You may need to allow a generator to run for a few minutes at no load after startup so that the temperature comes up. Why have block heaters? A common misconception is that the engine does not need a block heater in warmer climates. However, a block heater does more than help the engine to start in cold weather. Due to the dissimilar metals that the engines are built with, accelerated wear can occur during startup. The pistons, normally made of aluminum, will expand at a faster rate than the iron cylinder liners. This rapid expansion of the pistons can lead to scuffing of the piston skirt. Block heaters relieve most of this scuffing by maintaining the cooling system temperature and keeping the cylinder liners expanded. The extreme temperature inside the block heater is what causes the coolant to circulate through the system. (At times, you can hear the coolant boiling inside of the block heater.) The block heater's high temperatures flash off the coolant into small amounts of steam, causing the coolant to evaporate in slight amounts. While it takes a long time to show a difference in the coolant level, recording the amount of coolant added to the system will help establish a trend. (The block heater thermostat is located at the cold side of the heater.) If the engine is continuously using coolant with no signs of leakage, you should take oil samples and analyze them before continuing further troubleshooting efforts. If the block heater temperature gets excessively high, premature block heater failure or extreme engine damage may occur. Some generators use a control panel to operate their block heater. Normal walk-through inspections should include checking the cylinder head (or engine thermostat housing) for temperature and verifying that the engine or block heater hoses are warm. The temperature setting should be between 90°F and 100°F — never more than 120°F. Oil, fuel, or coolant leaks Most often, oil leaks are not in fact leaks but the result of “wet stacking” (or “engine slobber”) caused by excessive no-load run time. Diesel engine generators are designed to operate with a load — most effectively in the 70% to 80% range of rated output. When generators operate considerably below the rated output level, the engine can start to over-fuel or “wet stack” and damage the engine. Wet stacking — an accumulation of carbon particles, unburned fuel, lube oil, condensed water, and acids in the exhaust system — is caused by low-combustion chamber temperature. When a diesel engine wet stacks, the engine will need to be cleaned up by loading the unit for a few hours and burning off the excess fuel. If a diesel engine generator steadily runs loads considerably below the rated output level, you should pair the generator with an automatic load bank, which will place a false load on the generator system, keeping the engine properly loaded and preventing a “wet stack” condition. Another cause of oil leaks is directly related to the crankcase breathers. Most engine crankcase breathers vent directly under the engine. The fumes that come out of the breather contain an oil mist, which can produce a puddle under the engine and coat the generator and radiator with an oil film that collects dirt and debris. Recirculating breathers are available that can separate the oil and return it to the engine; remaining fumes get returned to the engine air intakes. The most common coolant leak occurs in the block heater hoses. Extreme temperatures on the outlet make block heaters hard on their hoses. For this reason, you should never use rubber hoses for block heaters; silicon hoses are specifically designed for use with block heaters. Always install isolation ball valves for block heater hose connections. Cooling system maintenance will help prevent leaks. Replacement of hoses and coolant every three years is recommended. Generators using newer extended-life coolant should still have hoses replaced and the additive package upgraded every three years. Cooling system antifreeze protection and conditioner should be maintained to the manufacturer's specifications. Radiator core damage is directly related to the coolant that is in the system. Poorly maintained coolant will cause liner pitting and eventually severe engine damage. Most fuel leak service calls are due to overfilling of the base tank. This is due to either human error or a failure of a pump system. Check remote tank pump systems and emergency shutoff systems periodically for proper functioning, and flexible fuel lines regularly for cracks and signs of aging. Controls not in auto “Not in auto” messages are the direct result of human error. The obvious reason for “not in auto” situations is because the main control switch was left in the off/reset position. This usually occurs after testing or servicing of a generator. After any service is performed on a unit, always double check the generator system yourself. The control switch may have several positions as in “off/reset” and “cool down,” which will cause the generator not to start in the event of a power outage. These positions should give an alarm. “Not in auto” is a generic term for the unit not being shut off, and may not actually be the main control switch. Alarms not reset, breakers open, switchgear not reset, and emergency stop buttons activated are all examples of “not in auto” failures. Several generator makes/models are set up to short trip the main circuit breaker during an emergency fault shutdown. When the generator shuts itself down for any reason, someone has to physically reset the control panel to clear the alarm. There may be several things to check and reset after a fault shutdown; however, this should only be done once the cause of the alarm has been identified and corrected. Ground-fault sensors are required by certain building codes or engineers during construction, and must be added onto a generator. These sensors look like light switches that are turned off. Ground-fault sensor shutdowns can be difficult to spot; they are not always tied to an audible or visual alarm. It's important that you determine whether or not your standby generator is equipped with one of these sensors — as well as how to reset it. If the generator uses remote switchgear, the switchgear will normally have to be reset. It is important to know your system and what it does during a fault shutdown. Here's a tip: Simulate a fault to see what it takes to get it running again in the event of an emergency. Air in the fuel system This is a common problem with newer generators that are not run on a regular basis. Closer tolerances within the fuel systems to meet today's emission requirements make fuel systems more susceptible to air affecting startup. This is not as common with older generators — many of which may have a leak in a line or check valves that are not properly holding the fuel in the engine. Lighter low-sulfur fuel has lower flash temperature, which causes the block heater to flash off some of the fuel within the injectors. One small bubble of air within a unit injector solenoid can cause an injector not to fire at startup. If enough injectors do not fire, the engine will not start. This failure is 100% preventable by periodically running the engine during weekly inspections. The engine does not need to be run until the coolant temp comes to normal. All that is needed is enough time to verify that the engine will start, that the air is cleared from the fuel system, and that the generator comes up to voltage and frequency. This can be completed in less than 5 minutes. Any additional test running would simply burn up fuel and air quality maintenance run time. Ran out of fuel Mechanical fuel level gauges may not always be accurate. Unlike a vehicle that is moving and using a higher percentage of its tank's capacity, a generator tank has no movement, causing the fuel to become stagnant. Mechanical gauges may also stick in a position until vibrations break them free. Low level alarms must also be addressed, as they provide the same failure alarm. Some generators are equipped with “low level shutdown” or “critical fuel level shutdown.” These shutdowns are there to prevent the fuel system from drawing in air when running out of fuel is eminent. Bleeding air out of a fuel tank can be an extremely difficult procedure. Running out of fuel due to plugged fuel filters can be prevented by maintaining the fuel tanks and periodically checking them for water and contaminants. Water or moisture in fuel can be damaging to diesel engines because the water properties create advanced ignition and accelerated detonation. If you use fuel polishing as an alternative to cleaning your fuel, check with your vendor to see if its fuel is affected by the chemicals; fuel polishing may not be able to remove water. Fuel filter plugging should be expected with the new ultra-low sulfur fuel, which has a very high detergent level and will clean out your lines and whatever else it comes in contact with. Engines equipped with electric shutoff solenoids should always have a manual bypass. There are several reasons to have shutoff solenoids; large remote above ground tanks can gravity feed to the engine, overpressuring the seals in the pumps or injectors and causing the fuel to mix with the oil. Solenoids should be DC power activating at the time of initial crank signal and remaining open until after the engine makes a complete stop. High fuel level alarm High fuel level alarms are required by government regulations to prevent the overfilling of a fuel tank. The alarm should activate when the fuel tank reaches between 90% and 95% capacity. This lets the person fueling the tank know when he or she should stop filling. Normally, there is nothing wrong with the generator when this alarm activates. On rare occasions, however, the natural thermal expansion of the fuel will cause the alarm to activate. This will usually occur on an extremely hot summer day. High fuel level alarms may or may not clear themselves when the fuel level drops below the set point. You may have to manually reset the alarm when the fuel level drops. Breaker trip First, verify that nobody has accidentally pushed a remote emergency power off switch. If a breaker trips after the automatic transfer switch (ATS), the generator will not start. The status of the automatic transfer switch should be checked during a power outage. The ATS should have lights or a display showing the switch position and source availability. If you find a breaker tripped, make sure you can determine the cause of the trip prior to resetting. Never try to manually operate an ATS if you don't know how to do so properly. Severe bodily injury or immediate death can occur. The transfer switch is smarter than you think and has a specific reason for being in its current position; attempting manual operation may drag you into a live bus if done incorrectly. How to Operate Cummins Diesel Engines Do you know what should pay attention to before starting the New and Rebuilt Cummins Engines? If you don’t know, the following article will show you the details. 1. New and Rebuilt Engines Break-in NT series Cummins engines are run-in on dynamometers before being shipped from the factory and are ready to be put to work. But the operator has an opportunity to establish conditions for optimum service life during initial 100 hours of service by complying the following guide. 1) Operating as much as possible at three-quarter throttle of load range. 2) Avoiding operation for long periods at engine idle speeds, or at the maximum horsepower levels in excess of five minutes. 3) Developing the habit of watching the engine instructions closely during operation and letting up on the throttle if the oil temperature reaches 250℃ F [121℃] or the coolant temperature exceeds 195℃ F [91℃]. 4) Operating with a power requirement that allows acceleration to governed speed when conditions require more power. 5) Checking the oil level every 8 to 10 hours during the break-in period. 2. New or Rebuilt Engines Pre-Starting Instructions – First Time Priming the Fuel System 1). Fill the fuel filter with clean diesel fuel. 2) Remove the fuel pump suction line and wet the gear pump gears with clean lubricating oil. 3) Check and fill the fuel tanks. 4) If the injector and valve or other adjustments have been disturbed by any maintenance work, check to be sure they have been properly adjusted before starting the engine. Priming the Lubricating System Note: On turbocharged engines, remove the oil inlet line from the turbocharger and prelubricate the bearing by adding 2 to 3 ounce. [50 to 60 ml] of clean lubricating oil. Reconnect the oil supply line. 1) Fill the crankcase to the “L” (low) mark on the dipstick. 2) Remove the plug from the lubricating oil crossover passage. See Figure 1. 3) Connect a hand or motor-driven priming pump line from a source of clean lubricating oil to the plug boss in the housing. 4) Prime until a 30 psi [207 kPa] minimum pressure is obtained. 5) Crank the engine at least 15 seconds (with fuel shut-off valve closed or disconnected to prevent starting). while maintaining the exteral oil pressure at a minimum of 15 psi [103kpa]. 6) Remove the exteral oil supply and replace the plug. Tighten to proper torque valve. Warning: Clean the area of any lubricating oil spilled while priming or filling the crankcase. 7) Fill the crankcase to the “H” (high) mark on the dipstick with oil. No change in oil viscosity or type is needed for new or newly rebuilt engines. A dipstick oil gauge is located on the side of the engine. The dipstick has an “H” (high) (1) and “L” (low) (2) level mark to indicate lubricating oil supply. The dipstick must be kept with the oil pan, or engine, with which it was originally supplied. Cummins oil pans differ in capacity with different type installations and oil pan part numbers. Check Air Connections Check the air connections to the compressor and the air equipment, as used, and to the air cleaners and air crossovers to assure that they all are secure and have no damage. Check Engine Coolant Supply 1. Remove the radiator or heat exchanger cap and check the engine coolant supply. Add coolant as needed. 2. Make a visual check-for leaks and open the water filter shut-off valves. If you are not using Cummins generator, you can follow the step here to operate a generator. Starting incorrectly, it may have a bad effect on the diesel generator set. It can be said that correct steps are the precondition to guarantee the normal operation of the unit. Then what are the correct steps to start a diesel generator? Through reading this article, you will get the answer. 1. Check whether the water tank is full of water. In winter, check whether the antifreeze is full 2. Check the oil level, fuel level, and radiator water level. If the level is lower than the specified value, it should be added to the normal position. 3. Check whether all the switch position is correct to meet the start requirements. 4. Check whether the diesel genset “Emergency Stop”button on the dashboard is correct. 5. Check whether the outlet switch of the unit is off-position. 6. Check whether the genset preheating is normal. When the indoor temperature is lower than 20 degree Celsius, the electric heater should be opened to preheat the diesel generator set. 7. Make sure there is no oil leakage or water leakage phenomenon. No debris in the genset and exhaust port. 8. Check whether the battery and voltage is normal. 9. Check whether alternator and diesel engine circuit is normal and firm. 10. Check whether the genset controller indicator light is normal. Why Is a Diesel Generator Hard to Start? Need Fuel They are popular power sources on boats and motor home. They are also used to provide primary or backup power for homes and businesses. Diesel generators are durable and fuel efficient, however there are a few factors that will make them difficult to start. Unlike gasoline engines, diesel engines will not draw fuel from the fuel tank if the fuel lines and pumps have gone dry. An engine that has not been run for a week or more may have had the fuel bleed from the lines. A diesel that has lost its prime will not start until fuel is back in the lines and pump. Diesels will have a priming pump or bulb located somewhere on the fuel system. Cold Weather Cold weather has two effects that makes diesels difficult to start. Cold fuel vaporizes poorly making ignition difficult and cold engines tend to crank over slowly reducing compression build up in the cylinders. Diesel engines will have glow plugs or pre-heaters to warm the air and/or cylinders. If starting is difficult in cold weather, ensure these heaters are functioning properly. A decompression lever will allow a cold engine to crank to a faster speed before applying compression, assisting the start process. Trouble Indicators Diesels function solely on properly vaporized fuel and compression. Black smoke after an engine has started is an indication of poorly vaporized fuel. Blue smoke is an indication of oil in the compression chamber, which means the engine is losing compression due to bad rings or a scored cylinder wall. Compression problems will require a rebuild or replacement of the diesel engine powering the generator. Injector Problems Improper fuel vaporization is a major cause of diesel starting problems. A fuel additive with detergents is the first step to remedy injector problems. If the additive does not make starts easier, the injection system should be checked out and repaired or replaced. Quick Starts You can purchase engine starting fluid at auto parts stores and truck dealerships. This spray aerosol of ether and petroleum products will help start a troublesome diesel generator. Remove the air cleaner cover and spray a two-second burst of starting fluid into the air intake while cranking the engine. If there are no other problems with the engine, it should start immediately. If the engine does not start, it has deeper problems and repeated use of the fluid will not help. Diesel generator sets can not automatically stop how to do? Recently, the Diesel generator set received a net friend's help, he purchased the diesel generator set in the use of the process can not automatically stop the situation, let us do a simple analysis. First of all, you can use a multimeter to measure the diesel engine shutdown relay operating voltage, compared to the normal voltage, if the relay has not yet action, then you need to replace the relay. Then no-load test machine, the normal operation of the unit; It also can be measured with a multimeter diesel engine shutdown solenoid valve on the normal working voltage, voltage and resistance, thus determine the electromagnetic valve is too dirty, resulting in diesel engine automatic stop when the solenoid valve can not be timely turn off part of the fuel injector into the fuel, the diesel engine idle speed. This must disconnect the positive DC power line, remove the solenoid valve cleaning, and adjust the spring tension, and no-load test machine, normal running. We supply multiple brands of generator set, such as: Cummins, Volvo, Deutz, Doosan Daewoo, MTU, Ricardo, Perkins, Shangchai, Weichai, Yuchai etc. The style of genset is varied, such as: container genset, trailer genset, portable trailer genset, soundproof genset, low noise genset, and silent genset, etc. Besides, we also supply design and construction of the noise reduction project up to the customer's requirements.
